Q: Who is the County's voluntary life insurance carrier?
A: Standard Life Insurance Company is the County's provider of voluntary life insurance. Standard is used because of its benefit structure, cost, service, and capabilities.
Q: How much voluntary life insurance can I buy?
A: You may elect coverage in increments of $10,000 up to $250,000 (a maximum of five times your annual salary). However, depending on how much coverage you elect, you may have to answer some medical questions.
Q: What about coverage for my spouse?
A: Once you have enrolled, you may elect voluntary life insurance for your spouse in increments of $5,000 up to $125,000. However, spouse coverage cannot exceed 50% of employee coverage. Some coverage may require medical underwriting. Also, you cannot be insured as both a member and a spouse.
Q: What about coverage for my dependent children?
A: Once you have enrolled, you may elect voluntary life insurance for your dependent children in the amount of $10,000 or $5,000 without medical questions during open enrollment. Please note that if both parents are employed by Johnson County Government, then only one parent may insure dependent children.
Q: What is the definition of “dependent” for purposes of voluntary life insurance?
A: Dependent children are unmarried and financially dependent upon your support.
Q: Will I be asked medical questions in order to qualify?
A: That depends on how much coverage you currently have and/or are adding. You may be asked to answer medical questions to determine if you qualify for the insurance coverage.
Q: If I leave employment with the County or retire, what happens to my voluntary life insurance?
A: Because this is a group term life insurance policy, your insurance will end when your employment with the County ends. However, you will have the option to convert your coverage to an individual whole life policy. For complete information regarding conversion and portability rights, please contact Standard Insurance Company at (800) 628-8600.
