CAFETERIA PLAN

Johnson County Government provides a Cafeteria Benefit Program that allows you to tailor portions of your benefits package to meet your needs while reducing your taxable income.*  The County also provides a benefit allowance to eligible employees.

Because we offer a cafeteria plan, it's important that you carefully select your benefits.  You may enroll in the benefit options at your new employee orientation and/or during open enrollment. You may also be able to make changes to your benefits in the case of a family status change.

Benefit Eligibility

If you are hired into a benefits eligible position, and elect to participate in the medical or dental programs, your coverage will become effective as follows: 1st of the month following date of hire, unless you are hired on the 1st of the month, and then coverage is effective immediately.

For information on coverage termination dates, please contact a member of the OFM-Benefits staff.

* The contributions you make under the cafeteria plan are not included in the totals reported to the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) or the Social Security Administration. Because of this, the amount of your social security benefits may be slightly affected. For more details, contact the local social security office.

The Benefit Allowance

The County provides full-time, regular employees with a $50.00 monthly benefit allowance. The additional money you spend on benefits is deducted from your gross earnings (prior to federal and state taxes being assessed) to provide you with significant tax savings on these benefits.
