Eligibility
An employee must be employed by the County for a total of twelve months and must have worked at least 1,250 hours during the preceding twelve months to be eligible for Family/Medical Leave.
Authorized Use of Family/Medical Leave
Eligible employees will be granted up to twelve weeks of leave per calendar year for approved family or medical purposes, in compliance with the County's Family/Medical Leave Policy and other applicable leave policies of the County.
To qualify as approved family or medical leave under the Family/Medical Leave Policy, the employee must be taking leave for one of the following purposes:
> the birth of an employee's child and to care for that child;
> the placement of a child for adoption or foster care with the employee;
> to provide care, when needed, for a serious health condition of the employee's spouse, child, or parent; or
> for a serious health condition (defined as inpatient care at a hospital, hospice, or residential medical care facility or continuing care by a licensed health care provider) of the employee that affects the ability of the employee to perform his or her job duties.
It is the employee's responsibility to provide 30 days advance notice to their supervisor of the need to take Family/Medical leave when it is foreseeable for the birth or placement of a child for adoption or foster care, or for planned medical treatment.
When unforeseen events occur that require Family/Medical leave, employees must give notice as soon as practicable, within one or two working days.
The employee is responsible for providing information to their supervisor regarding their leave status.
Compensation While on Family/Medical Leave
If an employee has accrued, unused paid leave (i.e., sick leave, vacation leave, or personal holidays) available for use at the time of the authorized request, then the paid leave must be used and applied toward the requested leave. Once accrued, unused paid leave is exhausted, the remainder of the twelve week entitlement, if taken, is unpaid leave.
Returning to Work Following Family/Medical Leave
Upon completion of any approved family or medical leave, the employee will be reinstated to his or her employment position or a fully equivalent position.
